About This Site
So why a website about guns and ammo? Well, a few simple reasons:
1 – Knowledge is Power
Understanding firearms can go a long way toward gun safety. Most people who fear guns do so because of a lack of knowledge about them. Nothing can be more frightening than the unknown. So, one thing I’d like to accomplish with this site is possibly help just a few people overcome their fear of firearms. Additionally, by better understanding guns, ammo and how they work, if you ever have the opportunity to handle one, you’ll do so more safely for yourself and those around you.
2 – A Simple Collection of Info
It goes without saying that there is a plethora of information on the Internet. That can be a good thing, a bad thing, and in many cases, a very frustrating thing. Often when searching for information on a specific topic, it is very difficult to find that information in an organized way. Furthermore, most times the information is not only disorganized but also incorrect and often horribly difficult to understand no matter what your existing knowledge of the subject matter.
I find this to be the case with most websites on the topic of firearms. I’ve searched high and low, and – while I’ve found a lot of useful information – rarely have I found all the pieces of the puzzle in one place. Most of the time I’ll find a very thoroughly written site with loads of data and history but little practical and useful knowledge. Contrasty, some sites have lovely images and photos but no real details or information about what’s in the images. So, my hope is to gather some of the details from the vastness of the InterWeb and bring it here for people who share an interest in the subject and a desire to learn more.
3 – A Little for Me and for You
Personally, firearms are more of a hobby for me than anything. Really, the guns and ammo themselves are not the hobby as much as understanding the different types, where they come from and what they’re used for. To be perfectly honest, when I started this website I didn’t even own a firearm. I was first introduced to them when my uncle showed me his service pistol from World War II. I was amazed and intrigued from day one. I would go another 10 or 12 years before I’d get a chance to actually squeeze off a round. I was not long out of high school and dated a girl from the midwest. Her father gave me my first lessons in understanding and using firearms. Although, there was one simple thing he had trouble explaining to me: “what does the gun caliber mean?” Some of you are reading that and thinking “everyone knows that.” Really? Do they? Maybe they think they do, or they pretend they do, but I’ve found that most people don’t. Not completely anyway. Such was the case with this kindly man. Either he didn’t get it fully himself, didn’t know how to explain it, or I was simply being dense. But the only answer I could get was that “caliber tells you what size the bullet is.” OK, but is a twenty-two bigger than a nine millimeter? And what the heck is thirty-aught-six (not, it’s not thirty-odd-six)?
So I began my quest for guns and ammo knowledge. Fittingly, my frustrations about gaining such knowledge also quickly followed. I know, you’re saying, “dude, there are tons of books out there on the subject.” True enough. And, I have a couple myself. But, there are two problems with that: 1 – I’m not much of a book reader, and 2 – Even the books I’ve found aren’t organized the way I want to understand it. So, the end result has been me finding tidbits here and there and piecing it together in my head. But, I’m a visual person, so I like to see it more than read about it. So I’ve decided to collect any information, history, details, diagrams, photos and anything else and bring it to this site to educate myself and you. So, part of this is selfish, and part of it is all about sharing the wealth – wealth of knowledge that is.
I hope you find this site helpful and I welcome your comments, feedback and knowledge as well. So get started on your education of firearms today. We hope you will be back for more!
