CORPUS CHRISTI, TX -The man found shot in the stomach outside a resident’s home has died. He passed away just before 7p.m. Monday night. Forensic detectives will work through the night to identify the man.
A trail of blood led police to the wounded man found behind a Country Club home. Police believe he attempted to break into the home on Greenbriar Drive Monday morning. It’s unclear whether the home owner, Dan Caballero, owner of Fox Home Builders, fired off a gun found inside the house. The man was rushed to Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Joe McComb, a neighbor, rushed home after his daughter-in-law called with news of the shooting.
“You know it always makes you nervous when it comes close to your home. But you just never know. Unfortunately, it’s become a part of life,” said McComb.
Police questioned Caballero, but are not saying whether he shot the gun at the man. They claimed they found a gun inside Caballero’s home that had been recently fired.
“I think most people take steps to protect themselves through alarm systems or good communications between neighbors. You just never know when this sort of thing is going to happen,” said McComb.
In the state of Texas, homeowners are allowed to protect their property even using deadly force to defend themselves against an intruder under the Castle Doctrine.
At this time, no charges have been filed.
